Spectrum Lab set-up for a 24 hour SID monitoring station

Set-up of SpectrumLab is relatively straightforward; here I will take you through the main points to consider.

Components Window

This is found under Components / Show Components
Use this window to configure the components that should be in circuit, for SID monitoring we want all the components turned off, take special note that the AGC is turned off!

Options / Audio Settings

This is where you set the soundcard input, sample rate and bits per sample, you will have to set these to suit your soundcard capabilities, but in general you want to set the sample rate to the highest possible (half the sample rate will be the highest frequency available in the FFT display) and the bits/sample to as high as possible, the more bits per sample the larger the dynamic range (number of signal levels) you will be able to distinguish

Options / FFT Settings

Here you can set the units to record, I prefer Volts but it’s up to you. You can also adjust the amount of internal averaging, this can help provide some smoothing so reduce noise in the result.

Plotter settings

The Watch List Tab should contain a list of the frequencies you are monitoring, be careful of artefacts in the FFT appearing as channels, these can usually be detected as signals that exactly mirror (in every way) the true signal. When choosing the channels to watch use the average function (avrg(low,high)) this will introduce a little smoothing and reduce noise.
On the Horizontal Tab set the scroll rate to about 20s, this does two things, it reduces the update to the plotter graph to once every 20s and also reduces the capture of data to once every 20s, this keeps the amount of data manageable and gives you a reasonable time axis on the plotter window.
On the Memory, Misc Tab, set the number of channels you want to record.
On the Export Tab set the name of the file you want your data saved to and the file format

If you want to periodically save the plotter graph and upload it to a website (see SIDs page) select File / Periodic actions and enter the two lines indicated, the first line saves the plotter window in a file, the second line executes a windows batch command which will upload the file. Both these files sit in the c:\ftp_upload directory.
