Stargazing at Mote Park, Maidstone, Kent - Saturday 7th March 2015

On Saturday 7th March 2015, 6 CMHASD members attended the Mid-Kent Astronomical Society (MKAS) Stargazing Spectacular at Mote Park in Maidstone, Kent.

Andy Barber, Andy Smith and Dr. Mike Rushton manned the CMHASD display and table in the main hall whilst Martin Crow, Jim Burchell and Honor Wheeler were outside with their telescopes.

The CMHASD members got there about 12pm and set-up the display and table in the hall, which included the Planet/Stars scale pictures, the 3D photos and a collection of Meteorites. Andy Barber was in his element with the meteorites, apparently he did not stop all day explaining the meteorites to all the children and adults alike. There was another table set up with meteorites but they were not allowing people to hold them so when someone came up and asked whether we were the table allowing people to hold them, well the word got out and the CMHASD stand was inundated!

In the hall there were 2 Astrodomes (with another elsewhere in the building) as well as Astronomy Now, F1 telescopes, MKAS displays, rocket making and flying and a series professional talks.

Outside Martin, Jim and Honor had their telescopes set up just a little away from MKAS so the public would go to the MKAS telescopes first. It started out quiet but soon hoards of people descended, and it was pretty much non-stop for Honor, Jim & Martin too until they packed up at 9:30pm and then there were still a few people wanting to look!

Honor had one family come up with a lad of about 8 yrs, whose Mum said he'd tried all the other telescopes but hadn't seen anything but after a little tuition from Honor he successfully saw Venus, his Mum was so relieved and really grateful and Honor was chuffed too that the boy had been successful :-)

The link below is a news video from ITV about the event, they had a reporter there before the public were let in. Please have a look to see which members appear in it :-)
