Atmospheric Phenomena

1. Multiple Phenomena

If you are observant you will occasionally be rewarded with multiple phenomena.

Martin Crow's image taken at The Pavilion, Sutton-at-Hone on 5th June 2014.
The two images below are the same image but have been processed differently to try and bring out the
features of interest - The images show an Upper Tangent Arc, Sundogs and Sun Halo.

2. Noctilucent cloud

Noctilucent clouds are phenomena seen during the summer twlight (June and July for the northern hemisphere and December and January for the southern). It is caused by sunlight striking stratus clouds at a height of around 82km.

3. Parhelia or Sundogs

Sundogs are a common bright circular spot on a solar halo. It is an atmospheric optical phenomenon primarily associated with the reflection or refraction of sunlight by small ice crystals making up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. Often, two sundogs can be seen (one on each side of the sun) simultaneously.

6. Moon Halo's

22 Degree Halos are not only seen around the Sun (NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN) but can also be viewed around the Moon, although they are much rarer. Below are two images that not only show pale halos but to the left a Moondog and above the Halo and seemingly attached an Upper Tangent Arc which stretchs out like wings on either side of the Halo.
